I so wanted to post a picture of my birthday party 50 years ago today: my Sally Draper credentials.  My 4-year-old brother and I are sitting at a card table with our great-grandparents and in the center is a many-tiered cake with a huge number 7 atop it.  I'm sure there's a companion snapshot somewhere of my mother bringing the cake out,  but I can't find it, and I can't get the scanner to work.  So all I have to offer is a photo of a dress that looks pretty much like the one I was wearing.

I think it was a very, very happy time in all of our lives.

  1. Happy birthday, my 57-year-old companion on the road of life. Love the dress, and the mental picture of that birthday cake, and your adoring mother setting it before you. May happy days be in your future.

  2. She WAS an adoring mother, Karen. We were so lucky, so briefly. On that day she had only 68 more to live.

  4. The pain of life is such a mystery. It stopped my heart to read that your mother had only 68 days after that wondrous birthday. It's a beautiful memory though, similar to the ones we had with Joey a week before he left us. It's a privilege to have good memories. I know that now.

  5. I had a similar dress that was green and white fine gingham check with a pinafore over it that was gauzy. There is a picture of me in it somewhere.

Robin - I'm sorry that at a young age, just after these memories, you lost a mother and a baby brother. Thinking of those times must be difficult. Prayers with you.
